To all those ladies with curly hair that want it straight: There's a new product in town called Brazilian Hair Straightening and it promises to leave your hair permanently straight (well at least for a few months), shiny and smooth. That means no more blow drying, no more flat ironing, no more fizzing and fuzzing! Miracle product? Jennifer did her research and has alot to say on the topic. Check it out!

by Jennifer N. Mancini

I love having my hair straight, especially when someone other than myself blow dries it for me so beautifully, my hair then looks so shiny and smooth. I suddenly have no flyaways and of course you see the fresh cut I’ve just had. As I live in Paris, the one new thing that has people raging about in all magazines is the new Brazilian Hair Straightening product. At first glance I thought it was amazing since it’s less dangerous than the Japanese Hair straightening technique. But… before trying it for myself I got down to the nitty gritty and did my research to see what all the fuss was about.

Of course, speaking from my professional experience as a hairstylist, people who have curly hair want it straight, they want to tame those outrageous curls and flatten them out. But are chemical Hair Straightening products the way to go, to get our hair straight for a few months and for so expensive?

Ceramic flat irons are great and so are our blow-dryers but ladies does that mean you can put those back in the shelf and have wash and gorgeous hair ready to go out with the Brazilian Hair Straightening Product? The answer is actually yes, it really does work and makes your hair shiny and looking healthy, but after all the research I’ve done, I strongly do NOT suggest this product. I’m usually very positive and optimistic about anything that makes hair look great and shiny, making our hair looking like a Barbie doll’s hair, but when health risks are involved, yes health risks, I opt for OUT! But let’s be realistic, I’ve separated the pros and cons and I’ll let you decide for yourself.

How does it work? Inside the formula is Keratin. Keratin is protein and this is a key structural material making up the outer layer of human skin but it is also the key structural component of nails, teeth and hair. Sticking to the hair part it, this formula also includes something called ‘Formaldehyde’ which together is quite toxic. Health Canada advises those to know what is inside this product and what the risks are before getting it done. The reason being is the Brazilian Blowout Solution contains 12% formaldehyde, containing 6000% more formaldehyde than what is allowable by law! That’s quite scary. Some illness results have been nose bleeds, difficulty in breathing (that is why a mask is necessary when being applied, both on the hairdresser and the client.) Formaldehyde is also known to be a carcinogen and ‘is easily absorbed by the body when inhaled, ingested, or comes into contact with the skin and eyes. Exposure to formaldehyde can lead to death, blindness, eye and skin irritation or burns, respiratory problems, headaches, gastrointestinal problems, and cancer. It is also known to cause birth defects.’ (Taken from the Medical Encyclopedia)

Now that we have that out of the way let’s revert to finding the positive aspect about this Hair Straightening Product.

What are the Results? This keratin treatment originated in Brazil, where it was first invented to tailor to curly hair and cut back from the fuzz and the telephone wire curls. The results are spectacular and I’ve seen them for myself since the salon I worked at uses it as well. The Procedure takes up to 3-4 hours, depending on the length of your hair, but the smell is what gets to you. It’s great for those who cannot blow dry their own hair, since this cut’s their timing in half. The hair texture changes and looks instantly healthy and shiny. The BEST PART is that it works on all types of hair. WOW! That means even chemically treated hair, permed hair, highlighted hair, or colored hair without causing any damage.

The stylist will use a flat iron heating up to 450-degree, a solution made with active keratin is sealed onto the outer layer of the hair cuticle and therefore sticks to the cuticle’s naturally rough edges. The formula then locks itself in the moisture, hydrating the hair, and adds a glossy finish.

Now that you have the Good and the Bad, I still suggest you get all the information needed to make your final decision if you truly want to spend the big bucks or save your health (which is free). Whatever you choose, the results of your looks will still come to one conclusion: You are amazing just the way you are! (Sorry Bruno Mars, I stole your lines there lol)Â

Most people do not associate massages with a hair cut, but many salons are now starting to offer head massages as part of their shampooing prior to hair styling. Jennifer shares with us the many benefits of a head massage to both our mind and our hair; as well as providing some much needed technical tips on how you and your friends can give each other amazing scalp massages!

by Jennifer N. Mancini

Feeling stressed? Who’s not? The best part of going to the hair salon is when you get your hair washed! What an amazing feeling, you sit back, relax and let someone else do the job. Then suddenly, two hands delicately touch your scalp and slowly start to massage your head. One word: Awesome! But does a head massage really de-stress and why does it feel so good? (Pardon to those who don’t like it)

To begin with, some of our most sensitive nerve endings are around the scalp and head areas that’s why when someone else is slowly massaging our scalp, certain zones of our head will directly release feel-good endorphins, this then blocks the stress hormone cortisol, and boosts circulation, blood flow, and in turn helps feed the hair follicle. It helps reverse the damaging effects of stress by slowing heart rate, respiration and metabolism and lowering raised blood pressure.

The proper term for head massage is known as Champissage, which is a form of Indian head massage. Many hair salons and spas provide a kind of scalp massage as part of a hair treatment or styling appointment. It’s recommended that even a regular head massage has positive benefits. Anyone seeking scalp massages to improve issues with hair should do so once a week for the greatest benefits. This allows the practitioner to gently spread the natural and special hair massage oils each week to improve strength, flexibility, and what we all love; shine. So not only does it feel great but it helps the hair as well. Next time you hit the salon, ask for a head massage, where they can gently work the scalp with warm oils and let the tension be relieved. It’s a beneficial because sometimes the tight muscles in the temple and neck can lead to tension headaches and pain.

Much tension in the body finds its way to the head and neck. By massaging your temples, neck along with your nose and forehead can quickly de-stress you in a few minutes. A scalp massage is a more direct attack on the pain, so it serves as a quick fix rather than using medication in some instances. The natural tendency to rub or massage areas of pain is instinctively correct, and scalp massage is definitely something to be explored for anyone who suffers from headaches. It’s fast and effective, proven fact! The only hard part is finding someone to do it for you! Clients are most content when they get up from the chair and thank you, simply because you got rid of their head ache. So when you’re at work and have a throbbing head ache, bribe a friend, give them chocolate and have them save your head, literally, with a 5 minute massage.

So now that you know all the technicalities as to why our brain sends off a positive feeling and that your body and mind are relaxed, why not learn a few quick methods to improve your own way of giving a head massage?

Start off by the top of the head, near the forehead, gently using your thumbs and fingers going in circular movements and then moving downwards. The main point is to slowly but firmly apply pressure and keep moving in circular patterns. You can then work your way down towards the neck area and apply pressure in 3 different points, by continually massaging the area of pain. Sometimes holding a pressure point too for a few seconds can undo the stress point.

It’s easier being said, but practice is definitely needed sometimes, so you don’t hurt anyone.

On that note, keep it simple and soft and your friends will be thanking you since you’ve taken on the new role of Dr. De-stress.

For the love of well-being; relax, let go, and enjoy!

Nowadays, we use so many harsh chemicals and products to get our hair colour to match the season's most fashionable hues. During her travels, Jennifer met Georges Bacon, owner of Coiffure et Nature and international renowned hair stylist who taught her that natural products can get you to your desired colour without dammaging your hair! With a strong belief in organic beauty, Georges has developped an entire line of henna based colouring products. His produts, a well as his style and salon, bring you back down to earth making you feel comfortable, relaxed...and beautiful!

Most of the time we hear about amazing places through word of mouth, we’re tempted; we go and test it out for ourselves, we end up loving it so much we then try to keep it to ourselves, but not this time, the secret is out! Nasta, my restaurant manager could simply not stop talking to me about her hair salon; ‘I heard it from a friend, who heard it from another friend, so I called, I made an appointment and I was impressed with the results.’ She then counselled me to go there and see it for myself and so I did just that!

I met with Mr. Georges Bacon, owner of one of Paris’ most distinguished hair salon Coiffure et Nature. This salon has had so much success it’s had people talking about it for the past decade. Not only Parisians, but stars that have gone through Georges’ magic hands have been simply astonished with his artistic touches to detail in his famous hair cuts but also about the product he sells.

The briefing
Mr. Georges Bacon who has a fine background in hairdressing worked hard to get to where he is today. He proudly bares his title of having won ‘Champion du Monde de Coiffure’ in Netherlands, but apart from having won different international prizes from Bruxelles, New York , Milan and other renowned parts of the world, he also collaborated with L’OREAL to help launch new products. Today Georges would agree that his main achievement was making known what Henna and ‘couleur vegetale’ is all about. This means protecting the planet and your hair by going green with natural hair dyes. These advanced hair coloring methods (although ancient, the Egyptians were among the first to discover natural hair dying) is having people talking; peroxide is out, natural is in!

Salon View

Coiffure et Nature opened its doors in 1999 specializing in organic beauty, the goal was to cut back and avoid any aggressive chemicals that can eventually damage the hair and hair follicle taking away its healthy look and shine. Natural hair dye is extracted from plants and vegetables. It does not contain harsh chemicals like ammonia, which are found in commercial hair dyes. Being non-toxic it does not pose a health or environmental hazard or does not harm the hair structure, in fact it can even help with conditioning and hair moisturizing.

The concept is brilliant; it also includes the wonderful different smells of aromatherapy using pure essential oils for hair treatments, although lavender is one of the only essential oils Sally, the main technician would add to her recipe. Sally’s past 20 years of experience in hair color brings her to one conclusion; less chemicals, the better! Behind her are 10 bowls of powdered colors. Different names were given to distinguish color and add a touch of ‘spice’ to the mix: Cacao, Cinnamon, Saffron, Curry, Chamomile, Tandoori, Ginger, Muscade, Red Pepper and Black Pepper. Her color recipes vary from different hair colors to different objective hair colors that a person may want, but remembering that there are rules to be applied. For example, you cannot lighten a brunette to a blonde unless you are light enough to begin with. If you are a brunette and you have persistent white or gray hair, these colors will cover them although the outcome leaves you with a natural streaked look. The whites will capture the color less than the greys. However, the advantage is that when your hair starts growing it doesn’t leave you with an obvious re-growth or demarcation. These products can be used on any type of hair and the results are great! Come visit and see for yourself, why not try a ‘couleur vegetale’ as they say?

The staff makes you feel so at home in this comfortable wooden, green, and zen atmosphere. Georges who works side by side with his wife Martine, the manager, will defiantly take care of you along with their expert hair stylists; Virginie, Perinne and Azedine. As for hair color you are in the caring hands of Sally or Anne-Laure who can concoct a perfect mix to get you the right hair color or streaks. Feel free to also pamper yourself in their Institute de Beauté that provides everything from massages, pedicures, manicures and spa treatments! As for me I treated myself to a wonderful pedicure, le top! I not only came out with great looking feet, but with new streaks and a cut!

Carla is a VIP Jet Setter and just a little chit chat was enough to allow Jennifer to escape into a dream world of hair, travel and style!

Since I am a hostess by night in a cute touristic restaurant in Montmartre, I also occasionally fall upon Parisians as well. I met Carla one evening as she stepped outside to have a smoke. Small chit chat lead me to an ironic blog, she happened to be the perfect Jet setting beauty I needed to write my August blog on. Her name is Carla Toussaint, age 28, lives in Paris and loves to travel!

She has beauty, she has style and she has money to make her smile. She considers herself part of the VIPs, an invitation that is widely spread out globally, all you have to do to attend these ‘social gatherings’ from one country to another is make sure you have the right hair, clothes and attitude to go with it. I welcome you to the fabulous life of the Jet setter. To most of us this life is unreachable, but hey, this jet setting beauty’s tips on French boutiques and exclusive hair salons is free to all!

An ordinary Saturday for La Mademoiselle.

5pm, Carla heads off to the cocktail party by the pool at her cousin’s villa, 8pm she’s fashionably late for dinner at the Fairmount Hotel in Monte Carlo, 11 pm to the Casino to play her luck, by 1:30 am she’s welcomed by old friends at the Beach Party. 1pm Sunday morning she awakes by the sun’s rays breaking through the cracks of her yachts curtains. She draws them open and the scenery speaks for itself, ’today I’m in Saint Tropez!’

She continues, telling me about her favourite hair salon and trendy boutique she loves on this very famous French Riviera everyone talks about.

Her favourite spot; Château de la Messardière situated in the hillside of Saint Tropez providing her with a lavish delight of heaven; pool, spa and hair salon. Here she has the basic necessities of what a woman needs. She mentions the price, but they are better to go unspoken of. ‘Here in Saint Trope I have my friends and favourite boutiques too’ she says with a cocky smile, it’s a shopping paradise for me, I go directly to ‘Kiwi’ affordable for all and classy, it’s the must have bikini’s for the summer! Not to mention Nikki Beach Bar.’ St-Tropez will never loose its glamorous edge, and who knows you might even bump into Bridgette Bardot

She also suggested a chain of hair salons widely known around France as well: Sometimes it’s not just about a price but trusting the skills and techniques of those professionals working there.

There is no doubt that travelling enables us to discover new cultures, concepts and ideas. But for a Hair Stylist travelling throughout Europe, discovery takes on a whole new meaning! Jennifer shares her experiences with us as she discovers European fashion, flare an individuality...but more importantly, a new hair style that she coined "the crooked hair line". Crooked is the new straight. That's right folks, you heard it hear first!

by Jennifer N. Mancini

One thing I love about travelling is how you see so much and learn so much as you make your way from one country to another. The styles change, the attitude changes and so does the hair. In one month I visited London, Porto, Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona and the south of France, but this time I discovered in one particular city a look that cannot go unspoken of. I call it the crooked hair line.

I noticed it mostly in the younger crowds rooming around the streets of Lisbon. That’s when I realized this type of different hair cut is just amazing! I stopped a girl, and pointed to her hair cut, suddenly my Portuguese was not as good as I thought it was! She said: ‘Sim, meu corte do cabelo!’ meaning: ‘Yes, my hair cut.’ I handed her my agenda and she instantly scribbled a word: MOTOR. I quickly engaged in wanting to find it but time was running out since we needed to get back to Cacém. I never got the chance to go see this hair salon for myself, but I did find it on the internet. Motor Hairport. Rua de São Paulo 121, Loja R/C Dto, Lisbon.

I was informed that they do the craziest haircuts, anything you can think of, but the best must have been the innovative crooked hair line in the back that was shaved with the clipper and made to look like a zig zag. This diverse look was still just so feminine with a subtle touch of rebellion. The look suited her, even though she was dressed in skinny jeans, pink high top Nike running shoes and a grey tank-top, she didn’t need the chains or black eye liner to match her hair cut. This is the beauty of mixing everything up and going with what you like, even if the styles don’t exactly match. People are still cutting their hair weather the Fashion houses working side by side with the big Brand Hair Salons pushing for long beautiful layers, but in the long run not everyone will grow their hair so that they can look like a perfect replica of the girl on the front cover of Elle Magazine.

Look at how Rihanna drastically changed her ‘I’m so cute’ look to classic punk, even shaving the sides of her hair and leaving it long at the top.

My next stop was the neighboring country, North East of Lisbon and 650 km away; Madrid. This hair style was still following me and rocking this amazing city that never goes to sleep, never! The amazing charisma in all the youths out there was spectacular. Their sense of dressing and hair was future forward, even the guys had the crooked hair line in a W shape, something I regret not taking a picture of. But the men are still mostly conservative yet some following the styles of their favorite ‘footballers’. We have Spain’s Fernando Torres who got rid of his highlighted locks, opting for a more serious look whereas France’s Djibril Cisse had quite a different look with a bleached beard. None the less, people are always looking for something new, something to shock the media or start a new trend. What’s next we may ask?

Peace, Vacation & Different Hair Trends.

Enjoy the summer; August is for all the Jet-setters out there!

Ever since moving to Paris, Jennifer has been scooping out the styles! The trends that affect the way we dress, how we accessorize and apply makeup also affect our hair styles. And who better than Jen to give us a few pointers on how to do your hair with "bohemian chic" flair?

by Jennifer N. Mancini

Bohemian chic is having a powerful come back for summer 2010. Here’s the info and the facts on how to get it and how to do.
Â
From North America to South America, from Asia to Africa, Middle East to the Pacific Islands, Australia to New Zealand, Antarctica to the Caribbean, let alone Europe, people across the world come to visit the beautiful city of Paris. Strolling through the scenic streets of my new city, I come across a wide range of hip fashionista tourists, all glammed up for the city of lights. Summer is here and the one thing we can all think about is looking good, feeling good and having sexy hair that meets up with our fashion good sense of style!

After meeting some of these girls and taking notes on their personal sense of style too, on a global scale we came to agree that loose waves are hitting the scene with that beach mood playing through. To add some spice, braids are definitely the hot MUST DO trend this summer. In line with the loose wave concept, the braid is loosening it’s tight edge and going flowy!

We can all agree that the perception of a style lies in the foundation of fashion trends. The trends in fashion reflect the mood of the public in terms of new clothes, shoes, purses, accessories and hair to compliment the finished product. The side braid is the re-innovative style that is fitting perfectly hand in hand with the floral trend hitting boutiques world wide. If we get to the root of Bohemian, we can relate to the french word “bohemien” meaning gypsy. Suddenly a perfect picture of Shakira comes to mind, although not being french, her mixed style of Bohemian chic-rock falls into place. Let’s face it, Music, clothes, accessorize and hair are all tangled in one. Patterns are in, and patterns in the hair too. A three fold side braid, a French braid, a fish tail braid, (one of my favourites)… there are endless possibilities. Since bangs are still in the scene, the side braid compliments beautifully the disconnection between the two; blunt and criss-crossed.

Bohemian Chic Parisien

The Method: Generally Bohemian clothes are loose fitting, so the hair is going to be loose too. Let those natural waves take over. Remember that when dressing up or even dressing down, find the balance by mixing subtle prints, or having one dominant color, not 20. Another good pointer is not to over-accessorize.
Â

Hair, Love & vive La mode branchée!

Planning a wedding is tough, but deciding how to do your hair on that special day is even tougher! Throw in a couple of bridesmaides, mother of the bride and of course, mother of the groom and that's a whole lot of hair trouble! If you are a bride to be, take a deep breathe, and read this article. Our hair expert, Jennifer, has seen this before and shares some tips on wedding day hair that will make your day just a little less stressful...and hair-fantabulous!

by Jennifer N. Mancini

Spring is in the air, that means love is the air. The formula completes itself; WEDDING SEASON!
That ring has been on your finger for a year now; ideas have been flowing through your head for the hair. You pictured it since you were a little girl and now you see it, up and neat with a delicate tiara and a side swept bang. No wait! A beautiful elegant bun, a knot of hair pinned to perfection with square diamond pins to add a touch of radiance. No, this time you got it; loose curls flowing backwards, some stubborn ones rebelling and gently cascading over your forehead to hide your blushing cheeks. You decide a broach to the side instead. This must be it!

Women, if only we had a dollar, or a euro, for every time we’d change our mind. By this point we’d pay off the wedding in no time! But putting money aside and talking straight hair business, have you really decided what it is you want? Aside from you, there’s the bridal party. Girls can get nasty and push for what they want as a hair style on your wedding day. But the Mrs. to be needs to remember a few certain details.

Let’s start with the bridal party. Talk to your girls. Take initiative to ask them what they like, maybe even one on one, so that they feel more comfortable. Just remember that sometimes not every up-do/hair-do will look good on everyone. Feel free to express yourself on what you pictured and what you think would match nicely with their dresses and their pretty faces.

Now for the M.O.B (mother of the bride) and the M.O.G (mother of the groom) Oh dear! Take a breather it’s not the end of the world, it’s actually the beginning of your new life. For your mother, and your future mother in law, I still suggest talking to them about their hair too. Already their nervous and stressed but it doesn’t mean they don’t want to look good either! Au contraire, by you asking them makes them feel like you care, and yes woman you do! P.S At least you have a head’s up when you see them the day ‘of’.

Now for the BTB (Bride to be) I can never stress this enough: GET A TRIAL DONE!
Why? Because even if you ‘think’ you know what you want, you’ll never be sure until the hair is done, and then your stuck debating if you like it or not. If your anything like me, I’m an either Yes, Or No. I like it, or I don’t. And I can tell if you do, or if you don’t. The day of the wedding you don’t have time for fixing, everything is timed. When you have a trial run with your hair professional, you discuss, try and see. You get the feel of it, the look, and girl, you will know. Just like you knew it was him, you’ll have that same hair feeling too! I promise.

Now because I love my ‘readers’ there’s something else I need to put out there. I’ve had clients suggest and propose things it sounded like Madonna circa 1980’s was still influencing them. Tight curls OUT. Anything that looks like a perm is not a bridal picture moment.

And to end this blogpost with style, here are a couple of my very own wedding hair-dos (with many thanks to Ani Met for the great makeup!):

Blow-drying our hair can sometimes be a chore. Curly, straight, long, short, treated or not, hair seems to often have a mind of its own, and without the training and expertise of hair stylists, how can we keep our hair looking its best? Jennifer is back with a vengeance with 3 important answers to 3 blow-drying dilemnas. Jen what would our "hair lives" be without you?

by Jennifer N. Mancini

I realized clients and friends always ask me for good blow drying pointers, so I choose the 3 most frequent asked questions. To all my readers; I hope these tips help!

After working out, how can I re-freshen up my do?
-Silia
This one is kind of tricky. Once again depending on what kind of hair and texture you have, straight can be tough. If you just pulled an amazing work out and you’re drenched, then you might want to wash it. Boys love fresh hair girls! And actually so does any woman in general! But the idea is to re-fresh. Comb your hair, and try using a water mist spray, and re-blow dry a specific section that might have been dented in your ponytail, bun, or might just look blahh. Loose waves or curls can be revamped by turning your head up side down and using a foam volumizer or spray gel. Now start scrunching your hair at the same time. If curls go ‘oh curly- bad’ (story of my life) try misting them with water and scrunching them by adding moose or a small amount of gel. Curls will usually re-shape.

Can you please give me some advice on the 411 before blow-drying?
-Evy
First things first sweetheart, you need to get rid of a lot of water before handling this situation. You start by towel drying your hair. Now depending on what kind of hair you have, you can use a styling cream, applying it in your ends first and then working it closer to the top. You never want to apply a product directly on your scalp. (This might add an oily residue) Now start off by dividing your hair into one section at a time using hair clips. Some people who have curly hair will start blow drying the hair first in the front this way eliminating any possible frizz that could have resulted by doing it last. Take your time doing the top of your hair so at least you’ll have a decent coif in the back!

How do I properly blow dry my hair or the back of my hair?
-Cynthia
A great way to start blow drying your hair is by doing the bottom and then working your way upwards. Use hair clips by dividing your hair from the section you are about to blow dry. (These clips can be sold in salons.) Keep working at the strand by drying the roots and in motion downwards towards the tips. Brushing and drying is the coordinative secret. It can be easy to blow dry your back strands by bringing them forward. As you reach the crown area, that’s when you start exercising those muscles and lift everything upwards. You can try tilting your head sideways as your doing those sections; this may help to relieve the constant lifting in your arms. Once again; brushing and drying. Keep your blow dryer nozzle an inch away from your hair so you don’t burn them!

With Love from Paris;
As the French would say: Bonne Chance!!

To Streak or not to Streak? That is the Question.

When it comes to adding streaks to your hair, the verdict is in! DEFINITELY YES! At least that's the opinion of our expert hair specialist Jennifer. But be careful, not all types of streaks are a go. It's important to consider factors such as your face, your hair cut, your personal style, etc. As usual, Jennifer gives us the insider tips to make sure we get our hair just right!

by Jennifer N. Mancini

I’m no Shakespeare but personally I’ll always have a soft spot for streaks. Nowadays, you can choose colours in a wide selection. Whether it be that sexy Marilyn Monroe blonde, café brown, gothic black, fire-red, pink-soda or bleu-de-mer, I’m a hard-core fan all the way! These colors sound so delicious, I’m already excited!

In respect to figuring out what’s hot in hair, each of us has once in our lives bought a Hair Magazine to scoop out what the Hollywood stars are doing. Some women are obsessed with getting their hair to look like ‘so and so from Desperate House Wives’ or ‘that singer from the Black Eyed Peas’, or ‘what’s her name from Days of our Lives?’ I work in the business and I’ve heard it all before. It all depends on your mood, your style and what you want to sport on your do. One thing I’m sure of is that most women have streaks, have had streaks, or plan on getting streaks…That’s right girls, spring is around the corner and we’re all running to the salon to get our first dose of “I wanna look hot this summer!” But the question remains: to streak or not to streak?

Remember, each streak is like a piece of attitude: you wear it, to show it. I always recommend going with a color that suits your skin tone, your ‘momentary’ hair color, your face, your eye-color, and yes m’aam your cut!

Example: You have dark hair with a chin length haircut (a lot of very short layers) and voilà , you go with blond streaks all around. I don’t know about you, but I instantly picture a zig-zaggy zebra pattern going on. That’s the kind of no-no you don’t want as streaks in your hair.

That’s why a consultation is SO important before getting anything done. Discuss the methods, patterns, and thickness of your streaks with your stylist. That’s very important too.

Example: You decide to get bangs after your streaks; suddenly your hairdresser realizes that the streaks don’t blend in properly with the side panels of your hair. Great! Now you have no choice but to run back to technical and get streaks added to your bang area.

To me, streaks are like a tailored suit. It defines you, your character and what you wish to exhibit. The exhibition is the art in your hair. It has to be tailored to your cut and look. It’s a full circle pattern. When something looks off, everything looks off. When the stitching in your suit is off, the whole thing looks off, weird or unfinished even. I highly doubt anyone would want an unfinished job in their hair!

Streaks are lovely in the sense that they truly brighten up your features, give you character and can be changed every few months to whatever color you want. The possibilities are endless. But please remember, it’s worth spending money on a professional, rather than yourself doing it or your friend who ‘thinks’ they can do it! I speak from experience!

Love, peace and streaks

Step aside ladies, the hair salon is no longer just for women! Men are a growing segment in the hair care industry with salons and cosmetics companies tailoring their products and services to men. The modern man cares about his appearance and loves to express himself through fashion and hair. Carla jots together some interesting statistics and throws in a few of her very own comments in this interesting portrait of the modern man.

by Carla Rosen

Women can spend hours at the salon every other week, at an average cost of $50 per visit. Tradition says that women are very conscious of their appearance and are willing to do whatever it takes to look good. That same tradition says that men have a more functional view of their appearance and are often contended with their monthly 15 minute haircut at the magic price of $12.

While that may have been true many moons ago, most would agree that it is quite an outdated view of men. In fact, nowadays, it seems that men are more interested in their appearance than ever before… and it’s not just the metrosexuals!

This trend is especially true in hair care. It is quickly becoming apparent that the hair salon is not just for women any longer. According to “Hair-Raising Truths” by Regina Molaro, 63% of medium-to-large-size salons polled indicated that the number of men using their services has increased. To meet this increased interest in men’s grooming and aesthetics, barbershops have even had to change their ambiance and style to cater to men that want more than the simple buzz cut.

Despite the recession and reports that people are extending their cuts by a week or two, many salons are reporting a rise in male customers for haircuts, manicures, facials, as well as other treatments. Men’s grooming is one of the few product markets equipped to maintain positive growth during the recession, according to leading market research publisher Packaged Facts in its latest study, “Men’s Grooming Products: A Global Analysis.”

Surprisingly, men’s hair products have probably been around as long as women’s products. I’m sure all men remember finding a tube of Brylcreem in their father’s bathroom drawers: “Brylcreem — A Little Dab’ll Do Ya!”.  For those too young to remember, Brylcreem was a cream-like beeswax-based substance that kept hair in place while giving it a shine or gloss. It took several washes before getting it completely out of your hair. Incidentally, the company that made the product started off as a manufacturer of household abrasive kitchen cleaners.

Hair products for men have indeed evolved and are becoming an important industry for cosmetic companies. Yes, it is considered as an industry! Depending on what report you read, estimates of the total US sales of hair products are anywhere from $8B to $10B a year, and are expected to reach $42.5B worldwide by 2010. The male grooming market has been increasing at double-digit growth rates over the past 10 years in the US and the men’s beauty market remains one of the best performing segments in the personal care sector.

What caused this change in attitude? Some blame it on highly effective marketing and constant exposure to shots of male celebrities with immaculate hairdos and appearance. In any case, men now realize that their appearance is no longer just functional but a matter of fashion, personal expression, and sophistication. Big cosmetics companies as well as small salons are jumping on the band wagon and tailoring their offerings to this growing segment.

Despite the obvious increase in interest in hair related matters, women, don’t expect your significant other to notice your new hairdo when you come home from the salon…hey, some things just don’t change!
