To Streak or not to Streak? That is the Question.

To Streak or not to Streak? That is the Question.

I’m no Shakespeare but personally I’ll always have a soft spot for streaks. Nowadays, you can choose colours in a wide selection. Whether it be that sexy Marilyn Monroe blonde, café brown, gothic black, fire-red, pink-soda or bleu-de-mer, I’m a hard-core fan all the way! These colors sound so delicious, I’m already excited!

In respect to figuring out what’s hot in hair, each of us has once in our lives bought a Hair Magazine to scoop out what the Hollywood stars are doing. Some women are obsessed with getting their hair to look like ‘so and so from Desperate House Wives’ or ‘that singer from the Black Eyed Peas’, or ‘what’s her name from Days of our Lives?’ I work in the business and I’ve heard it all before. It all depends on your mood, your style and what you want to sport on your do. One thing I’m sure of is that most women have streaks, have had streaks, or plan on getting streaks…That’s right girls, spring is around the corner and we’re all running to the salon to get our first dose of “I wanna look hot this summer!” But the question remains: to streak or not to streak?

Remember, each streak is like a piece of attitude: you wear it, to show it. I always recommend going with a color that suits your skin tone, your ‘momentary’ hair color, your face, your eye-color, and yes m’aam your cut!

Example: You have dark hair with a chin length haircut (a lot of very short layers) and voilà, you go with blond streaks all around. I don’t know about you, but I instantly picture a zig-zaggy zebra pattern going on. That’s the kind of no-no you don’t want as streaks in your hair.

That’s why a consultation is SO important before getting anything done. Discuss the methods, patterns, and thickness of your streaks with your stylist. That’s very important too.

Example: You decide to get bangs after your streaks; suddenly your hairdresser realizes that the streaks don’t blend in properly with the side panels of your hair. Great! Now you have no choice but to run back to technical and get streaks added to your bang area.

To me, streaks are like a tailored suit. It defines you, your character and what you wish to exhibit. The exhibition is the art in your hair. It has to be tailored to your cut and look. It’s a full circle pattern. When something looks off, everything looks off. When the stitching in your suit is off, the whole thing looks off, weird or unfinished even.  I highly doubt anyone would want an unfinished job in their hair!

Streaks are lovely in the sense that they truly brighten up your features, give you character and can be changed every few months to whatever color you want. The possibilities are endless. But please remember, it’s worth spending money on a professional, rather than yourself doing it or your friend who ‘thinks’ they can do it! I speak from experience!

Love, peace and streaks

    Hi Jen,
Thanks for for the 411 on streaking. When I first started coloring my hair years ago, my stylist always added a couple of streaks. I have admit it gives hair and face a totally different effect. I loved it! It’s awhile I haven’t had streaks, so I just might get some done next time I see my stylist. Thanks again!
